    Chinese food in Mexico?

Even when living in Canada, I prefer Mexican food to all others. But, every now and then, I get a craving for something different … like Chinese food.

That’s why I was happy to discover El Panda in Guaymas. It is located on Blvd Garcia Lopez, a couple of blocks past Ley, on the left (north) side of the road. There is a small parking lot in front. The ambience is basically fast-food Chinese. You order at the counter and wait for your food, which is available to eat-in or to take-out. There are only six tables, and it gets quite busy during the lunch hour. Though small, the restaurant is welcoming and clean and the staff is friendly.

El Panda is open seven days a week, from noon to 10:00 p.m. The one time that I went there for dinner, the restaurant was out of several dishes; but at lunch, everything was fresh and plentiful.

On a previous occasion, I ordered one of the combo’s, and had enough left over for dinner too. Combination #1 came with fried rice, chow mein, chicken enchilado, and a roll.

On my return visit, rather than a combo, I chose only two items, the chicken enchilado ($24 pesos) and fried rice ($12 pesos). The serving sizes are so generous that I still couldn’t finish everything. The chicken enchilado is a mix of large moist pieces of chicken and peanuts covered, but not drowned, in a slightly spicy sauce. This dish will pleasantly wake-up your taste buds.

Having previously found the chicken enchilado too spicy for her taste, my dining companion chose the orange chicken ($24 pesos) and the beef broccoli ($24 pesos). The delicious orange chicken is made with fresh tender chicken, cubed and marinated in a refreshing orange sauce. The beef broccoli dish is a mix of crisp tender broccoli, large slices of beef, and onion in a soy sauce. The only downfall of this dish is that there is more broccoli than beef.

In addition to four chicken, three pork and two beef dishes, rice, chop suey, chow mein and rolls, El Panda also has an extensive sushi menu.

When you need a break from fish tacos or carne asada, head to El Panda for surprisingly good Chinese fast-food.
